So you subscribed for a Callertunez or some other Value Added Service right. The time came for renewal and you noticed that you were charged. You didn’t bother to check exactly how much this was, but you did notice that a couple of days later you got charged again- wait for it…- for the same damn service!!!What the heck is going on you think?
Okay folks, here is where we need to slow down.
Before you go reaching for that phone to put an angry call through to MTN Customer Care in order to tell anybody there "the story of their life", it may be worth bearing in mind the following. And what might that be? Simply this- you may well have just experienced what is called Fall back or Micro-charging, a measure applicable to many of these services. So what exactly is Fall back and its associated Micro-charging sidekick?
Fall Back occurs where a customer has insufficient credit on his/her line to auto-renew a subscribed for service. In this situation an attempted charge will be made by the MTN network on the complete price for the original, let’s say for instance monthly plan. Where this fails however due to a shortfall owing to insufficient funds, a reversion to charge for a smaller period of time that your account balance can accommodate will be made instead.
The same thing applies to micro charging, except that the micro-charging scenario is not always exclusively governed by the amount of airtime on a customer’s line.
So take Callertunez for example, where you are charged N50 for the monthly subscription. Should it come to renewal time and you only have, say N40 on your line, instead of the renewal to fail and the Callertunez service stop on your line, the system will Fall back to charge you N30 which enable the service to extend on your line for the next 14 days. Then once you have sufficient credit to balance the remaining N20, that amount will be deducted from your line also. Hence the reason for the apparent “double charge”.
As such theoretically, it is possible to be charged more than once or even twice for a particular service, depending on the number of such on a customer’s line. For example where you have more than one Caller tune on your line. In either case of Fall Back charge or micro-charge, text message notification would normally be sent you, as such, it is important that you try to read the content and be aware of the actual charge rather than merely limiting your observation to the service charged for.
